The Freedom Illusion of College
One thing people talks about when it comes to colleage life is freedom. If you’re not from China, you should know that our middle schools and high shcools are incredibly conservative and (I would say) cruel to students. Colleage life feels relatively easier here.
But it’s just a feeling. There’re identical structural limitations to students, which prevents them from acting freely (not even willfully), rather fills their mind with the illusion of it.
The purpose of modern schools is not to educate, but to control and create divisions. This may seem a bit too much. So I will elaborate.
Some may hate to admit this, but education is a highly abstract concept and cannot be quantified. However, in a world profoundly influenced by René Descartes, we want things in exact numbers, and analyzed. We despise Sigmund Freud, because he talks about mind that we cannot prove and view objectively, and he sexualizes his theories, which we find just ugly. Then we create behavioral psychology, where everything is observed and known. Now we’re happy.
Education is often described in a poetic way, like education is one soul touching another and stuff like that. It requires meaningful interaction and connection between individual human beings, which produces no immediate outcome that we can measure.
What is the desired outcome we want from an educational system then? To answer that, we have to ask: What do we want from education?
Human resources.
I always hated that word. I meant the “resource” part.
We “educate” not because we care. We do it because we want economical growth. How else would you explain why we immediately ditch young people coming out of colleage and replaced them with seemingly cost-efficient Fascist artifact the minute we see it makes profit?
I don’t mean to blame the true educators. I use the word “we” as in humanity. Our system has this intrinsic tendency.
Now that we know what we want from education, it’s time to ask: How do we measure human resources? How do we measure the thing we want from education?
By their value.
What can you provide for this company? How can your skills serve this corporation? How do you use AI to provide more for us?
Then, education becomes a game. We fawn to win. We don’t have to outstand. We only need the system to divide us to a high level. We don’t need to become a great man. We just need to excel at meeting their bar.
That is how we create divisions.
